নান্দনিক কথা-সাহিত্যিক হুমায়ূন আহমেদের তুমুল জনপ্রিয় এবং পাঠক-নন্দিত উপন্যাস "কবি" I"কবি" উপন্যাসটি পাঠ করেননি এমন কোন হুমায়ূন-ভক্ত বোধকরি খুঁজে পাওয়া দুস্কর Iবাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম কালজয়ী ঔপন্যাসিক তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় "কবি" নামে কালজয়ী একটা উপন্যাস সৃষ্টি করেছিলেন,সেই বিষয়টা মাথায় রেখে একই নামে হুমায়ূন আহমেদ তাঁর উপন্যাসের নামকরণ করেছেন Iসুতরাং "কবি" উপন্যাস প্রসঙ্গে হুমায়ূন আহমেদ কতটা আত্মবিশ্বাসী এবং আত্মপ্রত্যয়ী ছিলেন তা সহজেই অনুমেয় Iউপন্যাসটিতে তিনজন বন্ধু আতাহার , সাজ্জাদ এবং মজিদের কবি সত্তার স্বপ্ন-বুননের গল্প বিধৃত হয়েছে Iমূলত এটি জীবনভাবনার কাঙ্খিত বোধকে স্পর্শ করার গল্প I

উপন্যাসের ফ্ল্যাপে ঔপন্যাসিক জানিয়েছেন : "কবি - জোছনার ফুল ধরার গল্প Iমহান বোধকে স্পর্শ করার আকাঙ্খার গল্প Iজীবনকে দেখা এবং না দেখার গল্প I"

উপন্যাস পাঠ শেষে আমার কেবলই মনে হলো,একটি চরিত্র ব্যতীত আর কেউই এই জোছনার ফুল ধরতে পারেননি Iসবাইই জাগতিক কামনা-বাসনার ছায়াসঙ্গী হয়ে জীবনকে নিঃশেষ করেছেন সময়ের প্রেক্ষাপটে Iকেবলমাত্র যে চরিত্রটি জোছনার ফুল ছুঁয়েছে তার নাম "সাবেরা",যাকে আমরা সাজ্জাদের মা হিসেবে জানি Iএকজন নারীর খামখেয়ালিপনার মাশুল যে তার পরিবারকে গুনতে হয়,"কবি" উপন্যাসে তার জ্বলজ্বলে প্রমাণ বিদ্যমান Iতবুও বলবো,ব্যক্তিস্বার্থকে প্রাধান্য দিয়েছিলেন বলেই তো সাবেরা জোছনার ফুলকে ধরতে পেরেছেন Iপ্রচন্ড উচ্ছল একজন নারী কখনো একজন নিস্পৃহ মানুষের সংসারে প্রাণখুলে শ্বাস নিতে সক্ষম হবেনা ,সাবেরার ক্ষেত্রেও এমনটি ঘটেছিল Iনিবিড় পাঠ-পরিচর্যায় নিশ্চই পাঠকের বিষয়টা বুঝে নিতে কোন অসুবিধে হয়নি I

বন্ধুদের মধ্যে মজিদ চরিত্রটিকে পাই আমরা উপন্যাসের প্রায় শেষ পর্যায়ে Iকিনতু পুরো উপন্যাস জুড়েই তার পরোক্ষ উপস্থিতি বিদ্যমান Iমূলত সাজ্জাদ এবং আতাহার তাদের স্মৃতিচারণে প্রতিনিয়ত মজিদকে প্রকাশ করেছে Iসুতরাং উপন্যাসে উপস্থিত না থেকেও পাঠকের কাছে মজিদ একেবারেই স্বচ্ছভাবে চিত্রায়িত ছিল Iএখানেই লেখকের মুন্সিয়ানা প্রকট হয়ে উঠেছে Iনেত্রকোনা গার্লস কলেজের ইসলামের ইতিহাসের শিক্ষক আব্দুল মজিদকে আমরা যখন দেখি তখন সে একজন নৈঃশব্দবতীর প্রেমে বুঁদ হয়ে আছে I

আতাহারের তীব্র কবি-সত্তার পরিচয় পাই উপন্যাসের ২৭০ তম পৃষ্ঠায় Iযখন ছোটভাই ফরহাদ তাকে প্রশ্ন করে ,"ভাইয়া,তুমি আমেরিকা যাবে না ?"
আতাহার বলে ,"যাব,তুষারপাত দেখার জন্য বেড়াতে যাব Iদেশ ছেড়ে যাব না Iআমি হচ্ছি এই দেশের একজন কবি Iকবিরা দেশের আত্মা Iদেশ ছেড়ে আত্মা যাবে কী ভাবে ?"

সাজ্জাদের পিতা হোসেন সাহেব এবং আতাহারের পিতা রশিদ সাহেব দুজনই বয়স এবং অভিজ্ঞতার ভারে নুয়ে পড়া প্রাণ I তাদের জীবনের এই সময়টা কাটে প্রচন্ড এক নিঃসঙ্গতার অতলে Iআশপাশের তরুণ প্রাণগুলো তাদেরকে এড়িয়ে চলে Iস্বপ্রণোদিত হয়ে গল্পের ঝাঁপি মেলে তাদের পাশে এসে কেউ কাঁধে হাত রাখে না Iলেখক আমাদের সমাজের এই বাস্তব দিকটা এই দুটো মানুষের কার্যকলাপের মধ্য দিয়ে তুলে ধরেছেন Iআমরা চাইলেই আমাদের মূল্যবান অকেজো সময় থেকে তাদেরকে কিছুটা সময় দিতেই পারি , এটাই হোক উপন্যাস থেকে কুড়িয়ে নেয়া আমাদের শিক্ষার অন্যতম দিক I

মানুষের জীবন কতটা বিচিত্র,বেঁচে থাকার সাধ কতটা তীব্র সেটার প্রকাশ দেখতে পাই "পরিমল" চরিত্রের সামান্য উপস্থিতিতে Iচালচুলোহীন আতাহার এক পর্যায়ে তার মামার আশ্রয় গ্রহণ করে এবং মামার অফিসের ম্যানেজার পরিমল বাবু তার সাথে রাতে ঘুমান Iউল্লেখ্য,তিনি প্রচন্ডভাবে রাত-কাশি রোগে আক্রান্ত , অর্থাৎ কাশির দমক কেবল রাতেই প্রকটিত হয় Iকাশির দমকে তিনি সারারাত ঘুমাতে পারেন না,হাঁসফাঁস করেন আর তার দীর্ঘ জীবনের জন্য আতাহারের কাছে আক্ষেপ প্রকাশ করেন Iবলেন - "জীবনটা ছোট হলে বাঁচতাম !" কিনতু প্রচন্ড গরমে আতাহার যখন সিলিং ফ্যান চালিয়ে একটু আরামে ঘুমাতে চায়,তখন পরিমল বাবুর উক্তি - "বাতাসে বুকে ঠান্ডা বসে যায় Iঠান্ডা একবার বসে গেলে আমি আর বাঁচব না ব্রাদার I" অর্থাৎ এই দীর্ঘ কষ্টকর জীবন থেকে তিনি মুক্তি চান আবার পরক্ষণেই বেঁচে থাকার তীব্রতা প্রকাশ করেন Iএখানেই হুমায়ূন আহমেদ তারাশঙ্করের "কবি" উপন্যাসের সেই বিখ্যাত লাইনটা তুলে ধরেছেন "জীবন এত ছোট কেনে?-- কে জানে কোনটা সত্য Iজীবন-মৃত্যুর এই হিসেবের খেলাঘর মেলানো বড় দুস্কর I

 পরিশেষে আমি উপন্যাসে উল্লেখিত তিনজন কবি চরিত্র প্রসঙ্গে কয়েকটি লাইন জুড়ে দিতে চাই :
"নৈঃশব্দ্যবতীতেই হলো কারো কবি সত্তার মৃত্যু
কেউ বা কবিতা ছেড়ে সুখ খুঁজে নিল আফিং-এ
সফল হলো যে সে-ও জীবন যুদ্ধে দিনশেষে ব্যর্থ"
তবে কী কবি কেবলই ব্যর্থদের উপাখ্যান ?

তিনজনই তো কবিতা লেখে,অথচ ব্যর্থ জীবনের বোঝা কাঁধে নিয়ে কবিতার সুখ ধরা দেয় একজনের হাতে Iকে সে ? উত্তরটা জানতে হলে এখনই হাতে তুলে নিন "কবি"I মূল রহস্যের জট আপনাদেরকেই খুলতে হবে ।

We find the character of Majid among friends at the very end of the novel, but his indirect presence is present throughout the novel. Athar's intense poet-figure is identified on page 28 of the novel. When younger brother Farhad asks him, "Brother, will you not go to America?" Atahara says, "I will go to visit the snowfall. Sajjad's father Hussain Saheb and Atta's father Rashid Saheb are both life and death experiences. In this time of their lives they are in a state of utter loneliness. The real side is the activity of these two people.If we want to, we can give them some time from our precious time, which is one of the aspects of our education.


In the slightest presence of the character "Pirmal" I see his uncle's asylum at one point, and his uncle's manager, Nirmal Babu, sleeps with him at night.
